A Birthmother’s Reflection: Kelly

Spread the Word

My adoption story is complex. I faced my unplanned pregnancy when I was in the middle of a divorce. My ex-husband and I had been separated for quite awhile. I already had a two and a half year old daughter and I knew that there was no way that I could raise another child on my own. During the short time we were together, I also had discovered that the birth father was a heavy drinker and had gone to jail a few times.

I knew I did not want to bring a child into the world with a father like that. I considered abortion, but I thank God every day that I could not come up with the money. I decided that adoption would be a better choice. I met the adoptive parents through a mutual friend. I had the chance to meet them and from the time that I walked in the door, I knew they were the people I wanted to raise my child. They were warm, loving, and seemed like a picture perfect family. We hit it off right away and it was a wonderful feeling.

I was induced on my due date. Tim and Kami were there at the hospital the whole time. Kami actually stayed in the room with me during labor. I was lucky enough to have the support of my family also, especially my mother. She was also in the room with me during labor. I gave birth to a beautiful little girl. Saying goodbye was the hardest thing that I have ever done in my life, but there was a comfort in knowing that she was going to a loving home with parents that love her just as much as I do.
