Common Adoption Questions

Learning how to adopt a child in Michigan can be complicated.
We are here to assist and guide you every step of the way.

How long will it take to adopt?

Most families waiting to adopt domestically have a successful placement in 12-24 months after completion of their home study and profile.

What is a home study and what kind of information will I be asked to provide?

A home study is a pre-placement assessment of the prospective adoptive family. The State of Michigan requires a home study for all adoptive parents to be conducted by an agency caseworker. The home study process will determine if a family is suitable for the adoption of a child. The home study will include several meetings with the caseworker, including one in your home, as well as adoption education requirements to educate you about adoption and prepare you for parenting an adopted child.

Can the biological parents come back to take a child?

Adoption is a permanent plan and biological parents cannot come back to take a child once parental rights have been terminated by a judge. The legal process is carefully monitored, and birth parents voluntarily release their parental rights prior to the legal adoption. Legal paperwork is signed by birth parents about 1-3 weeks after delivery. The child is placed in the home of the adoptive family directly from the hospital on a legal risk basis prior to the termination of parental rights. The birth mother has the right to change her mind until the judge signs legal termination of parental rights paperwork.
