Adoption Plans

When selecting an adoption plan, there are many factors to consider. Do you want to have contact with your baby after the adoption? Or are you someone who would like to maintain a relationship with her child by receiving photos and information? You can tailor your adoption plan to what will work best for you and your baby. There are many variations to the basic adoption plans, including open, semi-open, and closed. Your caseworker will help you and support you as you decide.

Adoption Associates is here to help you and support you throughout the adoption process and beyond.

Types of Adoption Plans

Open Adoption

Imagine being able to see your child and his adoptive parents regularly as he grows. That’s the scenario of an open adoption plan. How much openness you want in your adoption plan is totally up to you.

Semi-Open Adoption

In a semi-open adoption plan, birth mothers and adoptive parents share photos and information with each other throughout their childhood. In some cases, you can even experience milestones in your child’s life, like their first steps and their first day of school.

Closed Adoption

Sometimes birth parents desire a more closed adoption plan. We understand that there can be many reasons that a closed adoption is preferred. In a closed adoption plan, there is no contact between birth parents, child and adoptive family. The birth parents don’t receive photos or information about the child. We will be there to support you if this is your decision.

Factors Influencing Choice of Adoption Plan

Several key factors shape the decision between open, closed, or semi-open adoption plans. How comfortable birth parents feel about staying involved plays a big role. Their feelings help set the tone for how much contact, if any, makes sense going forward.

Support Systems

Whether you choose open adoption, semi-open adoption or closed adoption, there are complicated emotions for everyone involved. Access to counseling and strong support networks can make a real difference in helping all parties navigate those feelings in a healthy way.
