Adoption Associates has placed many children from countries including China, Russia, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Kazakstan, and Romania. Americans adopting children internationally complete the process to obtain legal U.S. citizenship for their adopted child through USCIS. We occasionally receive questions from adoptive parents about the status of their child’s U.S. citizenship. The National Council for Adoption (NCFA) released an article recently to help answer questions that adoptive parents may have surrounding immigration and deportation concerns.

Addressing Adoptee Citizenship Concerns

Recent news articles and public conversations about immigration, deportation, and birthright citizenship have led some intercountry adoptive parents to worry about their child’s citizenship status. This makes sense: The U.S. citizenship laws are relatively complex, and there have been news articles raising questions about whether adoptees would be impacted.

Intercountry adoptees who have acquired citizenship are not in danger of having their citizenship revoked.
