Adoption Options for Birth Mom’s

Spread the Word

Birth mom’s, you’re in charge! You have adoption options. When you choose adoption we want you to make an informed decision – one that’s best for you and for your baby. Here are some basics when it comes to selecting the adoption option that’s a good fit for both you and your baby:

Open Adoption

If you want openness, it is likely that you’ll start by looking at profiles of available prospective adoptive parents. You can choose the family and have the opportunity to meet them. You can start communicating with them, spending time with them, and plan the birth of the baby together. After the baby is born, you can continue contact. It’s common for birth parents and adoptive parents to send texts or emails, exchange updates, and share pictures. Often there’s ongoing meetings too.

Openness can vary from one situation to the next. Your plan might be for just a little exchange of information and contact, or you may plan for more contact and interaction over time.

Closed Adoption

If you want to, you can choose a closed adoption. The agency will then choose the best adoptive parents for your baby from among their waiting families. The adoptive parents will receive no identifying information about you, nor you about them.

Anonymous Surrender

In all states, there are laws allowing for the anonymous surrender of a newborn by his or her parent. Most often, the baby goes immediately to an already-approved adoptive family. These laws are meant to provide safety for a baby who might otherwise be abandoned. If you feel that you might be at risk for abandoning your baby or feel that you don’t have any other options, please talk to someone about your rights under your state’s anonymous surrender laws.
